Report on progress of Park Dept. developments at Myrtle Edwards Park. Concerns of the Parks Dept. are whether there are people in the neighborhood who can be involved in the planning effort, whether there are directions to consider that are beyond the current neighborhood plan, and what sort of community input of ideas would be most helpful.
The current plan is to hold a series of at least 3 public meetings (probably starting in mid-March), after which there will be an internal Parks Dept. review process and the Parks Board review. $ 850,000 has been allocated by the Parks Dept for this project, including planning, design, and construction. Other funds may be available through grants by other city jurisdictions (neighborhood matching funds, etc.). Similar lidding projects are the reservoir on Beacon Hill. The lidded reservoir will be paved, covered with sod and plantings, with public access. The Parks Dept. planning will be for facilities in the sloped areas that surround the reservoir on all four sides.
Question: Will water tower be fenced? Yes.
Question: Time line? About 9 months for planning and design. Bids will be let in the Fall, with construction of the park in 2008.
Question: Any plans for a shelter, picnic tables, etc. That will be up to
community. The Parks Dept will have guidelines, but lots of options will be presented.
Question: Are there special interest groups that want to be included? Yes –
current interests include a skate park, and off-leash pet area, tennis courts. These will be discussed at public meetings.
Concerns expressed re. natural buffers of sound from 35th Ave. traffic and lighting.
High Point Community Center Update – Brian Judd, Coordinator
Facility is at 6920 – 34th Ave. SW (34th and Willow), with recently added additions to former building. In addition to current programs (brochure available at seattle.gov/parks) 206 684-0644), the Center hopes to add summer child-care and camping programs. Note that there are meeting rooms (including kitchens) for rent to community groups. Open weekdays 1:00 to 11:00, Sat. 10:00 to 5:00.
Emergency Preparedness – Cindi Barker, rep. of neighborhood to SW Seattle Police
Precinct Advisory Committee.
The precinct leads the community re. emergency preparedness. An inventory of neighborhood resources (medical, first-aid, construction, etc.) is being prepared. In the event of a catastrophe, a command center tent will be put up in the parking lot of Thriftway. Relay points from each neighborhood will be connected through the police department. A disaster resource kit (local maps, radio contacts, block-watch networks, resources, shelter areas, etc. ) is being kept there. In individual households need a basic kit of emergency supplies of food, water, blankets, etc.) SNAP (Seattle Neighborhoods Actively Prepare) workshops are being organized throughout W. Seattle. Watch for future program announcements.
Nominations for MoCA officers: Volunteers are needed to assume offices of VP, coordinator of Neighborhood festival. Elections of other board members will be at the next meeting. If interested, contact Steve Sindiong at
