This past weekend over 25 people turned out at the first work party. The Parks department crew had brought a blackberry cutting machine in, which had cleared the canes away, but all the roots remained firmly attached and needed to be grubbed out by hand. The Eastern side of the property was attacked first, with significant progress. All the grubbing was completed, cardboard laid to suffocate remaining roots, with compost/chips spread on top. A prize was given to the largest blackberry root (aka the "brain" of the plant), I wish I knew the gentleman's name to recognize him - that root was a cubic foot big. The Parks dept. staff took it back to their office as a prize specimen. The next work party will be Sept 9th.
